Birmingham, AL — November 2025
This week marked a milestone for Birmingham’s barbering and vocational training community as The Honeycutt Initiative, led by master barber Wayne Honeycutt Jr., visited Lawson State Community College to inspire a new generation of professionals. The visit was part of an ongoing partnership aimed at introducing students to career pathways in the barbering and cosmetology trades, entrepreneurship, and community leadership.
A Legacy of Leadership and Opportunity
For over two decades, Wayne Honeycutt Jr. — owner of The Shop Bham on 1st Avenue North — has been a pillar in Birmingham’s small business landscape. Through The Honeycutt Initiative, he seeks to elevate vocational education by combining traditional trade skills with modern business strategy, discipline, and mentorship.
“Barbering isn’t just about cutting hair,” says Honeycutt. “It’s about communication, consistency, and community. Our mission is to turn skill into self-sufficiency — and self-sufficiency into service.”
The program encourages students to see barbering as both an art and a sustainable business model. During the Lawson State visitation, Honeycutt emphasized that every great barber has the potential to become an entrepreneur, a mentor, and a community builder.

Onboarding New Talent: Damarriae Bailey’s Journey
As part of the initiative’s continued growth, Honeycutt announced the onboarding of Damarriae Bailey, a promising graduate from Brown Barber College. Bailey represents the next generation of talent — dedicated, disciplined, and ready to learn from experienced professionals.
Bailey will be joining The Shop Bham team, where he’ll gain real-world experience in client management, branding, and professional development under Honeycutt’s mentorship. His addition reflects the Initiative’s commitment to bridging the gap between classroom learning and industry readiness.
The Road Ahead
The Honeycutt Initiative continues to expand its reach by partnering with local schools, barbering colleges, and community organizations to create a pipeline of opportunity for students in Birmingham and surrounding areas. Future visits are planned with other regional institutions to encourage trade-based career growth and promote entrepreneurship in the grooming industry.
